Last year Burger King created the “Whopper Sacrifice,” a Facebook app that gave users a free Whopper if they were willing to delete 10 people from their Facebook friends list.
“Now is the time to put your fair-weather Web friendships to the test,” the Whopper Sacrifice site explained. “Install Whopper Sacrifice on your Facebook profile, and we’ll reward you with a free flame-broiled Whopper when you sacrifice ten of your friends.”
The friends sacrified then showed in activity feeds. The promotion was such a success that Burger King closed the account the account after the WHOPPER® Sandwich “proved to be stronger than 233,906 friendships.”
